When purchasing a TENS unit, you should consider the following features

Analog and Digital Units
A digital unit normally will have and LCD display and push button controls.  For some people, this type of unit is better since it is easier to program and select the type of treatment mode.  In addition, a digital unit can have digital treatment timers to set a specified treatment time. 

Number of Modes
With more modes, you can better pin point the type of treatment to produce the best results.  The most basic units will only have one mode, and some expensive models feature eleven different modes.  You should make sure you get a unit with at least 3 modes of constant mode, burst mode, and modulation mode.  More advanced units that feature more modes are usually other variations of these 3 main modes.

Output Power
The mA rating on the TENS unit is how much power the unit can output.  A higher rating will mean the unit can send a stronger electrical pulse.  A basic unit has a rating around 80mA and a higher end unit will be around 130mA.  The output power is adjustable.

Frequency Range
A portable TENS unit which can adjust the frequency will be better.  When treating different areas of the body, the tissues, fat, and muscles in between are different.  By adjusting the frequency, you the electrical stimulation and better reach the treatment area.
